An 18th minute goal from Darren Maynard was enough to give Wells all three points at Bowden Road this afternoon.

Maynard's strike, latching on to a defensive back header that left two attackers on one O's defender, came in a first half that the visitors struggled initially in before growing into the game. After the break, Oldland livened up a lot and had several chances to grab at least a point from the encounter but found home keeper Alex Mitchell in fine form.

Despite the bad weather this winter, it was a sunny afternoon that greeted the travelling O''s fans and it was also soon apparent that good football would be at a premium on a pitch that resembled a hard summer's surface. With a ball that bobbled unpredictably, both sides struggled to retain possession early on. Scott Robson was first to test Mitchell on ten minutes, the Wells keeper holding easily. O's gloveman Jamie Powell saved from Tim Downes' header then watched as Maynard curled a shot over the bar.

It wasn't long before Maynard opened the scoring when a back header towards Powell was intercepted and the striker coolly slotted home on eighteen minutes. The goal woke Oldland up and they had the best of the remainder of the half with Jason Side volleying wide and Connor Davies firing over from the angle then hitting a 25 yard dipping volley at Mitchell.

Powell then denied Steve Sokol's thirty yard scorcher, tipping the ball over the bar, Mark Randall heading over from the subsequent corner. Powell also saved from Tom Manning's free kick as Wells finished the half on a high, forcing three successive corners.

The second half started quietly, not helped again by the pitch but also by a fussy referee who constantly seemed to blow up for the most minor of fouls. It didn't help the flow of the game with both sets of supporters getting increasingly frustrated by the stop start nature of the game. Finally, Oldland settled down and enjoyed the best spell of the match with Josh Dempsey particularly unlucky. The giant centre half hit a fierce volley which Mitchell blocked, a yard either side and it would have been 1-1. Dempsey then headed wide from the next corner and he was denied again with a 25 yard strike that Mitchell parried away to safety on 73 minutes,

Paul Coles couldn't quite get enough on a cross from Connor Davies and a minute later, Maynard received a harsh yellow card for diving; there looked to be contact but no action would have probably been the correct outcome.

As the game wore on, Wells were restricted to counter attacking as Oldland threw three men up front, taking off defender Tom Welling and midfielder Side, replacing them with youngsters Lewis Powell and Josh Williams. The O's couldn't convert any of their three late corners, two of which were halted with the referee's whistle for foul challenges on the keeper. Coles went closest late on, pulling his shot a foot wide while for Wells, Oli Bryant chipped the ball on to the crossbar.

Williams earned the game's sixth caution in stoppage time for a foul, a fitting end to a game that was never really allowed to ebb and flow at all.
