Oldland tonight made it three pre season wins out of three with a hard fought but deserved 3-2 victory over last seasons Somerset County League Runners Up,Purnell Sports.
The match started with the O’s on the front foot, they were quicker to the ball and their passing was crisp and sharp and were using the whole pitch well.
It was no more than the O’s deserved when young striker Bryony Higgs raced away from the home defence to fire home via the keepers foot after just 5 minutes. By the time Vicky Mundy hit the post with a header from Nicky Hawkins-Hoare’s cross on 19 minutes the home keeper had already made 2 outstanding saves.
Oldland deservedly got their second on 24 minutes after Higg’s shot was blocked and Chloe Tape followed up the loose ball to smash home.
Unfortunately within 6 minutes the home side were level with their only two clear cut chances to date, the second an outstanding strike from 25 yards which left keeper Briony Lomas with no chance.
Despite Oldland’s dominance for the first 30 minutes Purnell Sports were now buoyed that they had pulled level from nowhere but Oldland couldn’t edge in front before half time as Mundy had a 42nd minute penalty saved.
The second half was a more close affair with both teams having their own spells of possession but it was Oldland who created the better chances. Purnell Sports hit the Oldland bar on 75 minutes but it was Annie Hawkins Hoare who sealed victory for Oldland 2 minutes later with a composed finish from just inside the area.
A superb performance in possession from Oldland who would have had the game wrapped up by half time if the home keeper hadn’t made 5 absolutely top class saves to deny Higgs,Tape twice,Annie Hawkins Hoare and Beth Dale.
Next up for Oldland is their final Friendly on Sunday at home to last seasons Somerset County League Winners, Frome Town.
2pm at Castle Road.
