Yeeessss Lukey !!!

Oldland stepped back up to third with a fine victory after a slow start against Devizes Town keeping them within touching distance of the impressive Bristol Telephones and Westbury United at the top of Toolstation Western League Division One. The win came off the back of a disappointing midweek defeat at Chippenham Park.

The O's started with a now familiar look, Ashley Bernard and Jack Metcalf at the back with Scott Gregory. Josh Southway and the always dangerous Luke Lecrass operating as wing backs with Shomari Sengor, Joe Walters and Reece John continuing their impressive recent form as the midfield trio. Olly Trevarthen and Danny Carter started up front and the O's were still missing Greenwood, Parker, Williams and Charles from the squad. New signing Connor Davies was on the bench along with Matt Ellery and reserve team call-ups for Ricky Godwin and Brad Lewis.

The game didn't get off to a good start for Oldland, Manns tipped a shot past the post for a corner on 21 minutes as both sides seemed to have difficulty settling with lot of loose passing and stray balls earning shouts from either dug out towards them. Devizes took the lead on 30 minutes when keeper Manns came out to clear a ball and was harshly judged to have fouled the forward. Despite his best efforts and getting a foot to the penalty, it was put away by Devizes for 1-0. Oldland then reshuffled slightly as Metcalf moved into midfield with Reece John stepping into the central three at the back and shortly afterwards almost scored after Joe walters had been set up by Danny Carter, his fine long range shot cannoned down off the bar but Olly Trevarthen pulled the rebound wide. He made amends on 35 minutes though, puttting the impressive Lecrass through wide on the right, his run and cross being brought down at the far post and volleyed home by Danny Carter. The first half ended with a lengthy delay whilst Scott Gregory was treated following a poor tackle.

Not gonna lie, that first half was not the best but boy, oh boy, did the second half come to life. Throughout the half Oldland became stronger and stronger continually attacking down both flanks, the midfield three providing the passes and openings for the wide men; Josh Southway putting across some fantastic balls from the right and forward Olly Trevarthen happy to pull left, often beating his man and trying to set up colleagues. On 70 minutes he succeeded, a great run past several players with a cross which again Danny Carter was on hand to convert for 2-1.

As the game went on, Connor Davies was introduced for Lecrass, who had been fantastic all day even after being injured in the first half, and Oldland could have had more. Scott Gregory headed a corner just wide and Trevarthen continued to create chances. Matt Ellery replaced the injured Ashley Bernard on 83 minutes and Ricky Godwin made a late debut appearance as a substitute. The final action being a late flare up following a challenge by Davies on the Devizes keeper and a spot of Mayweather/McGregor theatrical pushing and shoving from players on both sides before Davies was given a yellow.

A good victory after a slow start and a very, very impressive second half

Man of the Match: Danny Carter - two well taken goals (by player vote, after Scott was too long in the shower!)
