Oldland were on the front foot from the whistle and Jordan Greenwood saw his header cleared off the line on six minutes from a Gary Shorney corner. But a minute later, Broadwell shocked the O's by taking the lead when a long throw was only partly cleared and a Broadwell attacker shot home via the post.
Jason Side hit the post from a Ryan Ashwood pull back and the O's had the vast majority of chances in the first period. On 25 minutes, the O's had the ball in the net but the referee's whistle had already blown for an Oldland free kick, frustrating times. Side twice went close with headers that were deflected for corners and O's believed they should have had a penalty when a header struck the arm above the head of a Broadwell defender.
Ashwood and Connor Davies tested the keeper with low shots and after the break, Davies came very close to equalising, forcing the Broadwell keeper to fling himself full length to his left to keep his shot out. With twenty minutes to go, the pressure told when Shorney swung in a free kick and Jordan Greenwood looped a header into the far corner of the net off the post.
O's pushed for the winner and Ashwood's shot was well saved by the keeper after he was set up by a class pass from sub Tom Morgan.
The competition rules stated that it was straight to penalties after 90 minutes with Broadwell taking their kicks first. O's Ashwood saw his kick saved well and the next four were scored till Josh Dempsey saved Broadwell's next kick. The advantage didn't last long as Matt Curnock's was saved but immediately, Dempsey produced a brilliant one handed stop before Tom Morgan netted to level it up at 3-3 and take the tie into sudden death.
Both sides scored before sadly Gary Shorney grazed the crossbar with the fourteenth and final penalty of an absorbing shootout. Broadwell take their place in the second round where they will travel again, this time to Cheltenham Saracens.
