ROMANY TO THE RESCUE AS OLDLAND LADIES EDGE FRIENDLY
By Steve Lavis
Oldland Ladies edged a competitive pre season friendly against County League side Bristol And West last Wednesday as young striker Romany Cochrane sealed victory with 16 minutes to go.
It was as expected a close game between two well matched sides however the pitch made it difficult for either team to produce any decent spells of football. The Abbott's once more started with wing backs with Nicky Hawkins-Hoare and Laura Garlick
occupying the wide berths.
The match started in an end to end fashion but Oldland drew first blood after just 5 minutes when a pin point free kick from Hawkins-Hoare found skipper Vicky Mundy
in the box who flicked a header past the stranded home keeper. It took just four minutes for the home team to equalise as a hopeful long ball was latched onto by Bristol And West's pacy striker who outstripped the Abbots defence to slot home. Both teams were looking to attack whenever possible and both tested the opposition keeper with long range efforts.
The second half saw an improved Oldland performance as they kept their shape a lot better and had the better of the chances as Annie Hawkins-Hoare and Mundy both saw goalbound efforts well saved by the home keeper and also Romany Cochrane
hit the bar while at the other end, Oldland keeper Jayde Holcombe
made a stunning save from a Helen Brain free kick.
The winner came in the 74th minute when subs Lydiya Myckalechko (making her return after a year away) and Cochrane combined with Myckalechko crossing for Cochrane to smash the ball in off of the far post.
Oldland probably just about deserved the victory but still room for improvement with the start of the season closing in. Next up for Oldland is their last pre season friendly on Sunday 3rd September at home to Bristol Ladies Union,2pm ko.
